Left 4 Dead VGA performance with 23 graphics cards - tech
(hx) 11:55 AM EST - Dec,01 2008 - Post a comment
The chaps over at Guru3D have tested the performance of Left 4 Dead with 23 graphics cards. This title should really not be any problem for a modern PC and definitely doesn't need high-end gear. The three cards that really shine (for the money) are GeForce 9800 GTX+, GeForce GTX 260 and Radeon HD 4870. People that play games at 1280x800 or 1280x1024 are budget gamers. And any budget card will be just fine too, though the GeForce 8600 GT simply doesn't cut it anymore due to lack of framebuffer and raw power.
Here we have the level we test in. We move from the start of the level all the way up to the 2nd picnic table with the light, run that scene 3x and average out the three results. Our campaign is Blood Harvest and the level we measure in is The Woods. Grab weapons and health from the picnic table to your right. Walk straight down the path into the forest. Keep following the path until you reach a bridge. Don't worry about getting lost, you can't really get off the path. Note: zombies may come down on you from either side as you walk along the path. Be alert and watch your friendly fire.  We recorded the first 30 seconds of the time demo we created for you to watch, have a look here.

This patch updates the action role-playing game Sacred 2: Fallen Angel to version 2.31. The new version implements a new in-game options menu, adds ten new bosses, eight new portals, a new level of detail system, improves pathing, beefs-up the end bosses, and more. The changelog can be found here. The 620MB patch is mirrored on Bigdownload, FileShack, GH.
Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals EU Demo - demo
(hx) 11:15 AM EST - Dec,01 2008 - Post a comment
Lighthouse Interactive has released a new demo (466MB) for Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals, allowing you to try out this adventure game by Benoit Sokal's White Birds Productions. Word is: "In the demo, players discover the first chapter of the game: Alcide's Flat, which gives them a glimpse of the eerie, corrupt atmosphere that is unique to this visually stunning adventure game." Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals is also available in North America, UK and North Europe. Mirrors: AtomicGamer, CGO.ro, FileFront, GH.
Battlefield 2 v1.5 Patch Public Beta Soon - briefly
(hx) 03:27 AM EST - Dec,01 2008 - Post a comment
Over on the EA UK forums, a DICE employee posted some details about the upcoming Battlefield 2 v1.5 patch. According to the post, a public beta is planned before Christmas:
Yep there will be a public Beta before final so you can see what we have been working on. Some things you'll see/experience and other things you won't as its behind the scenes to secure Battlefield 2 accounts and playing experiences.

The beta would be for everyone that wants to install it, the more people that do the better feedback we get and we don't have an update 1.30 again. That update alone set us on the road of public beta to stop it from happening in another update. The plan is to get it out before Christmas yes.

  • Core i7 920 Core Disabling Performance Analysis - A lot of today's games are able to make use of the multi-core technology on offer from the i7 920. The question is exactly how many cores do we really need to get the most performance out of our games?

According to Stu, a netbook with a 10-inch screen is "fine for an hour. It's not something you're going to use day in and day out."

Six Ways WoW is Worse than Real Life - briefly
(hx) 06:26 AM EST - Nov,30 2008 - Post a comment
Cracked has published a hilarious article detailing six ways World of Warcraft is worse than real life. Here's an excerpt:
Like any online community, WoW has its share of perverts. One particularly odd manifestation of this is people approaching Night Elf female characters: ...and offering WoW gold to take off their clothes and dance. Why they can't make their own Night Elf female character, take off its clothes, and dance, is going to have to remain between them and God because we don't really want to know. Incredibly, WoW's programmers didn't seem to anticipate any of this and so the game doesn't give players a lot of ability to perform any sexual actions. But horny people with lots of spare time can get pretty creative.

Apparently male night elves have two penises. Then there's the Deeprun Tram, an automated tram running between two major WoW cities, which has gained a reputation as a place for perverts to secretly have cyber sex (and sometimes they get caught, as relayed in this infamous tale). Probably the most famous WoW pervert went by the character name "Bronze Mustache". Whether this is some kind of porn reference or not, we don't know, as we don't really know much about the intricacies of the Chinese language. This WoW soap opera carried out among some Chinese players is pretty long and convoluted, but the basics are that "Bronze Mustache" stole another guy's wife, "Quiet Moon", and the Chinese WoW community became so upset over it that there were mass server-crashing protests eventually culminating in a mass in-game suicide.

Their sordid tale is recounted here, including original posts from the aggrieved husband and international newspaper accounts. Sample chat log: Finally there's this thoughtful blog post and discussion about in-game sex that offers some insights possibly better left unexplored. From the comments: "On my server in particular we had a swingers guild, where the players would meet with each other IRL, slam it, and then return to their regularly scheduled lives. There were women characters, played by women , that were known to be cyberers. I had more than one girl actually want to call me up and have phone sex. More than one naked photo sent to me. So what am I trying to say? Through it all, MMO's are sometimes a very clear mirror of Real life."

JoWooD Apologizes for Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods - briefly
(hx) 06:58 PM EST - Nov,28 2008 - Post a comment / read (3)
In a surprising move JoWooD issued a German PR with an apology to the community for the quality in which they shipped Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods:
Gothic 3 : Forsaken Gods is full of bugs, just as the main game was. Fans are complaining about the poor quality of the game and JoWooD felt that it's time to release a statement in this regard: First of all we want to thank the community for showing their support and we also want to thank those who have chosen to buy the game. Unfortunatey, it wasn't possible for us to release a game that could fully satisfy you, for different reasons. The game was released this year because that was what we and the community desired. JoWooD and Trine have worked under a lot of pressure, and to repair some of the mistakes we released the game with a patch, hoping to make it better. Michael Kairat, Executive Producer of JoWooD said: We are now getting the full "bill" from the community for our mistakes. JoWooD Productions would like to present their apologies to the fans for releasing an unsatisfying game.

Furthermore Michael Kairat explained that in the next days a new patch will be released which will improve the quality of the game. It will be available for download on JoWooD's Official Website. We also want to make a content patch which will include opinions, suggestions, wishes from the community. After the feedback from the community, we will release a statement regarding the patch. Toghether with Spellbound we will make early beta tests for Arcania: A Gothic Tale, to be sure that past mistakes will not be repeated. JoWooD admits their mistake, and will prevent it from happening again, says Michael Kairat on behalf of the entire team.

Grand Theft Auto 4 PC Uses SecuROM DRM - briefly
(hx) 02:36 PM EST - Nov,28 2008 - Post a comment / read (7)
Today Rockstar Games released quite a hefty FAQ on the installation process of the PC version of GTA IV. As part of an anti-piracy strategy, the publisher has implemented a strong form of Digital Rights Management, DRM for short, that requires you to activate your copy of the game once through the internet.
- Activation via Internet (1x per system, no limits, Fallback for systems without web access)
- Copy protection Securom: The original disc is required for playing (Execpt: Download version of GTA 4, for example from Direct 2 Drive)
- Requirements for playing (singleplayer): Games for Windows Live account for saving/achievements (1x free creation), original disc, Securom runs in the background
- Requirements for playing (multiplayer): Active internet connection, Games for Windows Live account, For uploading videos: Rockstar Social Club Account.
- If you don't have web access or don't want to connect your gaming PC to the Internet, Rockstar wants to offer a not yet specified system to activate GTA 4 via another PC with web access. Details are supposed to be available on launch.
- For the normal GTA 4 (PC) version with disc installation, activations are unlimited. But the original disc is required for playing.
- This does not apply for legally downloaded versions of GTA 4: Depending on the vendor the following is possible: Five parallel installations with the possibility to revive a "free” installation, if an old installation is deleted. For this purpose the customer has to have web access with the PC GTA 4 is installed on.
- Those playing GTA 4 with an illegally hacked version have, according to Rockstar, to fear that the game will not be fully playable.
- If you change two major components of your PC (like the graphics card or the CPU), you will possible have to reactivate GTA 4.

On the Xbox 360, players will need to make sure they completely activated their copy of the LE, and will have to play in specially marked "Officer's Club" playlists.

So they completely compromise their XP system in an effort to make more money? Hmmm.

GTA4's PC Multiplayer Modes Expanded - briefly
(hx) 03:34 PM EST - Nov,26 2008 - Post a comment
IGN reports that the MP modes in Grand Theft Auto IV on the PC will stay the same, but will now support up to 32 online players!
Before jumping into a match we checked out the adjustable parameters for creating a game which included a number of things. Police can be toggled on or off, density of pedestrians adjusted, weather and time of day selected, maps and icons can be hidden, along with a variety of other customization settings. In addition there'll be better search options when trying to find a game online, though during the session we didn't get much of a chance to see that as the matches were being set up for us.

To start things off, the 32 players in the server were split into team of four, all with uniform visual appearances, though there'll be options for things like hats, pants, shirts and other character model accoutrements to craft a unique outfit for your avatar. The first round was a standard team-based deathmatch, which basically consisted of the four teams running around a section of city, taking cover against walls and firing at opponents when they came in range. We all started with pistols that aren't particularly accurate, so those who managed to find the uzi pickups floating around the zone of battle had a distinct advantage, as did those who decided to hop into cars and run over the opposition.

Qwak is a 2D platform/puzzle game developed by Jamie Woodhouse. It was initially released for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron in 1989 as part of Acornsoft's 'Play It Again Sam 10' compilation. An updated and enhanced Amiga version was given a budget release by Team17 in 1993. This update added several new features, including a two player mode and additional levels. The game was re-released on the Amiga CD32 later that year in a double-pack with science fiction shooter Alien Breed. Now, the PC version is available as well and there's a demo you can download!
